Arthur Gea Stuns Third Seed Ben Shelton in Shanghai Masters Second-Round Upset

GEA EDGES PAST SHELTON IN TWO TIEBREAKS

Arthur Gea beat third seed Ben Shelton 7-6(5), 7-6(3) on Stadium Court at the Shanghai Masters on Sunday, one of the standout results of the tournament's round of 32. Neither set was broken by either player, with both tiebreaks going Gea's way as the American's big serve was not enough to see off the Frenchman.

The win continues a strong run for Gea in Shanghai and marks one of the biggest scalps of his career so far, knocking out a player seeded to make a deep run at the ATP Masters 1000 event.

KHACHANOV ALSO THROUGH

Elsewhere on day seven, 26th seed Karen Khachanov beat Adrian Mannarino 6-2, 6-4 on Grandstand 2 to advance in straight sets, continuing his own strong record at the tournament this season.

In doubles action, the pairing of L. Miedler and N. Oberleitner beat alternates R. Cash and A. Erler 7-6(8), 7-5 on Court 4, while M. Polmans and J. Zielinski defeated wildcards F. Jiang and T. Zhang 7-6(3), 6-2 on Show Court 3.

SHELTON'S EARLY EXIT

Shelton's loss is an early departure for a player many had tipped as a potential finalist in Shanghai after a strong run of form over the past year. It continues a mixed stretch of results at Masters 1000 level for the American, who will look to regroup before his next tournament.

The result also means the draw has opened up in that section of the bracket, with Gea now in line for a potential run deeper into the second week.
