F1 Brings Its First-Ever Sprint to Singapore as Mercedes Duo Chase a Marina Bay Repeat

A new wrinkle at an old favorite

The Marina Bay Street Circuit has hosted a Singapore Grand Prix since 2008, but this year's edition, run from October 9 to 11, added something the Singapore weekend had never had before: a Sprint race. It is the sixth and final Sprint event on the 2026 calendar, closing out the format's expanded run through the season on one of the sport's most demanding street layouts.

For a circuit already known for punishing drivers across a long, humid Sunday race, squeezing an extra competitive session into the weekend raises the stakes on a schedule that leaves little room for recovery between sessions.

Mercedes arrive with momentum

George Russell heads into the weekend as the defending winner of the Singapore Grand Prix, having taken his fifth career win there last time the sport visited Marina Bay. His teammate, rookie Andrea Kimi Antonelli, arrives on the back of a stronger run of form after a difficult patch through the European leg of the season, having picked up top-five finishes in Baku before his most recent visit to Singapore.

The pair have helped drive Mercedes to a strong position in the constructors' standings this season, with the team's focus split between closing out that fight and managing a title picture in the drivers' championship that still features Russell, Antonelli, Lewis Hamilton, Charles Leclerc, Lando Norris and Max Verstappen all with a mathematical path to the title.

A season-defining stretch

With the season's final Sprint now run at Marina Bay, the remaining rounds revert to the standard weekend format, putting the emphasis back on Sunday afternoons rather than split points across two races. For Mercedes, Singapore was always going to be a measuring stick given Russell's history there. Whether Antonelli's rebound form travels with him to the rest of the calendar may end up mattering more to the championship than anything that happened across the Sprint weekend itself.
