F1 Confirms Rwanda Grand Prix, Bringing the Sport Back to Africa After Three Decades

A NEW RACE, AND A RETURN TO AFRICA
Formula 1 confirmed a 10-year agreement to host a Grand Prix in Rwanda, with the race set to join the calendar in the early 2030s. The announcement, made this week, marks F1's return to the African continent for the first time since the 1993 South African Grand Prix at Kyalami.
Details of the exact circuit location and race date are still being finalized, but the deal was framed by organizers as a long-term commitment rather than a one-off addition, with Rwanda positioning itself as a hub for motorsport and major events in East Africa in recent years.
FILLING A LONGSTANDING GAP ON THE CALENDAR
F1 has expanded aggressively into new markets over the past decade, adding races across the Middle East, Asia and the Americas, but Africa has remained the one inhabited continent without a round on the modern calendar. The Rwanda agreement directly addresses that gap.
The announcement comes in the same week F1 teams said they expect a final decision on the status of the season-closing Qatar and Abu Dhabi Grands Prix by the middle of October, as the sport continues to shuffle its late-season calendar.
WHAT COMES NEXT
With the race still years away, F1 and Rwandan officials are expected to release further details on the circuit design, host city and exact scheduling in the coming seasons. For now, the agreement locks in Africa's return to the world championship for the next decade, a milestone organizers have pursued for years without a concrete deal in place.
