Fernando Alonso Commits Long-Term to Aston Martin, Ending Speculation Over His F1 Future

Doubts put to rest

Fernando Alonso and teammate Lance Stroll have both extended their long-term contracts with Aston Martin, the team announced Tuesday, closing the door on recent speculation about the 45-year-old's future in Formula 1.

That speculation had picked up after Alonso suggested ahead of the Spanish Grand Prix that a switch to the World Endurance Championship was a real option worth considering. The new deal makes clear that, for now, his focus stays on F1.

Alonso's own words

"I took my time to make this decision, but racing is my life, my passion, and I know I still have the speed and determination to compete at the highest level," Alonso said. "I'm committed for the long term with this team." He pointed to what he sees building around him at Aston Martin: "I truly believe in what we are building: we have strong leadership, incredible people, partners and facilities."

A difficult season, a hopeful future

The commitment comes during a rough patch on track. Alonso has managed just 3 points through 15 races this season, with a season-best finish of ninth at the Dutch Grand Prix in August, numbers that make the vote of confidence in his future all the more notable.

Alonso has also been one of the more vocal critics of the current generation of cars, which lean heavily on electrical power, a frustration reportedly shared by Max Verstappen, who has said he even considered leaving F1 over the issue. That complaint may soon be addressed: F1 announced in June that it will shift toward more engine power and less electric hybrid power starting in 2027, the same year Alonso's new commitment is aimed at.
