Jean Silva Survives First-Round Knockdown to Submit Jose Delgado at Noche UFC, Calls for Title Shot

A ROUGH START

Jean Silva walked into the Noche UFC main event at Desert Diamond Arena in Glendale, Arizona, on Saturday as the favorite, and for most of round one it looked like the wrong pick. Jose Miguel Delgado, stepping in on short notice after an injury pulled original opponent Yair Rodriguez from the card, came out landing clean punches and chopping at Silva's lead leg while Silva barely threw back. A heavy right hook from Delgado dropped Silva late in the round, and Silva absorbed several more shots before the horn saved him, visibly stunned.

THE TURNAROUND

Silva regrouped between rounds and came out a different fighter in round two, working back into the fight and taking control of the pace. By round three he had stung Delgado with a clean punch of his own, then seized on the opening to lock up a one-arm rear-naked choke. Delgado tapped at 2:57 of the third round, capping a fight that swung almost entirely in Silva's direction after the shaky opening five minutes.

"It's crazy to say this, but it went just as we rehearsed back at home," Silva said afterward. "We knew exactly what was going to happen, the way that he was going to charge, the position that he was going to have and the way we were going to finish it."

A SECOND STRAIGHT WIN, AND A CALLOUT

The finish extends Silva's win streak to two, following a decision over Arnold Allen earlier this year, and pushes his UFC record to 7-1 with six finishes. The Fighting Nerds featherweight, who improved to 18-3 overall, is ranked No. 6 in a division that will crown its next title challenger at UFC 333 in October, when champion Alexander Volkanovski defends against Movsar Evloev. Silva did not wait to make his intentions known.

"It's for the next champion," Silva said. "Whoever holds the belt [after UFC 333], I'm the next champion."

WHAT'S NEXT

Whether the UFC grants Silva that shot immediately will depend on how convincingly Volkanovski or Evloev comes out of October's title fight, and on whether the promotion sees a first-round knockdown against a late replacement as a strong enough resume line to leapfrog other contenders. For now, Silva leaves Glendale with the finish, the bonus buzz around a highlight-reel comeback, and a public marker laid down for whoever is holding the featherweight belt by the end of October.
