Jorge Martin Wins Mandalika Sprint After Record Pole as Marc Marquez Crashes Out of the Title Fight

Pole, then victory

Jorge Martin arrived at the Pertamina Mandalika International Street Circuit with a two-point title lead over Marc Marquez and left qualifying with it looking a lot safer, smashing the circuit's lap record to take pole by more than half a second from Marco Bezzecchi. He then converted that pole into a sprint win, crossing the line ahead of Luca Marini and Bezzecchi, who completed the podium.

Maverick Vinales and Fabio Quartararo rounded out the top five, in a sprint that was as much about who did not finish as who did.

The crash that changes the picture

Marquez, who had cut Martin's title lead to just two points with a win at the Japanese Grand Prix the previous round, crashed out on the opening lap in Indonesia and failed to finish. For a championship that had been running close for most of the season, a zero-score sprint for one rival and a race win for the other is about as sharp a swing as the title fight could produce in a single afternoon.

Why Sunday still matters

Sprint points count for less than a full Grand Prix, so Sunday's main race at Mandalika will do more to settle how much damage Marquez's crash actually did to his title hopes. But arriving at a track where he had already broken the lap record, and following it up by beating the field when it counted, gives Martin a psychological edge heading into race day that a sprint result alone does not fully capture.

With the Malaysian round at Sepang still to come before the season ends, neither rider can afford many more afternoons like the one Marquez just had in Lombok.
