Manchester City Equal British Transfer Record in Frantic Deadline Day

THE HEADLINE DEAL
Manchester City signed Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez for a reported 125 million pounds on the final day of the Premier League's summer transfer window, a fee that equals the British transfer record. The move capped weeks of speculation and made Fernandez one of two marquee deadline-day arrivals at the Etihad, alongside a deal worth up to 65 million pounds for Everton forward Iliman Ndiaye.
THE REST OF THE DAY
Chelsea moved quickly to reinvest, agreeing a reported 117 million pound deal for Aston Villa winger Morgan Rogers, while sending striker Nicolas Jackson the other way to Villa. Tottenham Hotspur broke their own transfer record to sign West Ham United's Mateus Fernandes for around 85 million pounds, and Manchester United added Brighton midfielder Carlos Baleba.
THE BIGGER PICTURE
The window, open since mid-June, closed at 11pm on September 1. More than half of the Premier League's twenty clubs broke their individual transfer records over the summer, with Chelsea, Tottenham and Manchester City spending the most of all.
WHAT'S NEXT
With the window shut until January, clubs now turn to proving the outlay was worth it on the pitch. Fernandez and Ndiaye have both already started for City, with Fernandez setting up Erling Haaland's winner in a 1-0 win over Coventry just days after his arrival, keeping City the only side in the league with a perfect record through three matches.
