Marc Marquez Wins Japanese GP, Cuts Title Lead to Just Two Points

A decisive pass at Turn 9

Marc Marquez won the 2026 Japanese Grand Prix at Mobility Resort Motegi on Sunday, completing a full sprint-and-race sweep of the weekend and pulling his Ducati Lenovo Team within two points of championship leader Jorge Martin with the title fight entering its closing stages.

Marquez made his move on Lap 11 of 24, passing Martin's Aprilia with a lunge at Turn 9 before pulling away to win by roughly two seconds. It was his 79th career MotoGP victory and his fourth at Motegi specifically, a track that has clearly suited him over the years.

A late charge for the final podium spot

Behind the top two, Marco Bezzecchi held on for third after a tense late battle with Enea Bastianini, who ripped off four consecutive fastest laps in a bid to catch him but ultimately ran out of time. Alex Marquez had a difficult day by comparison, serving a double Long Lap penalty early in the race that effectively ended his chances of a strong finish.

Further back, Raul Fernandez came out on top of a three-way fight with Ai Ogura and Pedro Acosta to take fifth, while Francesco Bagnaia finished eighth, a quiet result for the former champion.

The title race tightens

Martin's second-place finish kept him atop the standings with 333 points, but Marquez's win closes the gap to just 331, setting up a genuinely tight finish to the season. Bezzecchi sits third overall, 49 points off the lead, effectively out of direct title contention barring a late collapse from the top two.

The series now moves on to Indonesia's Pertamina Mandalika International Circuit in Lombok, a track widely seen as favoring Aprilia's machinery, meaning Martin may have home-turf advantage of his own heading into the next round of what has become a genuine two-rider fight for the championship.
