Marc Marquez Wins San Marino GP After Bezzecchi's Lap-One Crash, Grabs Championship Lead

A WEEKEND THAT TURNED AROUND FAST

Marc Marquez's San Marino Grand Prix weekend started badly. He topped Friday practice at the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli, then crashed shortly after, and watched Marco Bezzecchi win Saturday's sprint race outright. By Sunday afternoon the picture had flipped entirely. Marquez won the 27-lap Grand Prix by 0.657 seconds, his brother Alex Marquez followed him home in second on his Gresini Ducati, and Pedro Acosta completed the podium in third for Red Bull KTM.

BEZZECCHI'S CRASH OPENED THE DOOR

The race turned on the opening lap. Bezzecchi, trying to build an early lead on his Aprilia, lost the front at Turn 12 and watched his bike cartwheel through the gravel in front of stunned Italian fans, ending his afternoon before it had properly started. With his closest challenger out of the race, Marquez still had work to do, fending off a real attack from Jorge Martin before settling into the lead his younger brother could not quite close down.

"After Bezzecchi's mistake, I was a bit too confident and then Martin attacked me," Marquez said. "But then I regained the confidence again."

TOP OF THE STANDINGS FOR THE FIRST TIME

The win moves Marquez level with Martin at the top of the championship on 274 points apiece, with Marquez holding the position on countback thanks to his higher win total this season. It is the first time all year that Marquez has sat atop the standings, a genuine swing given that he was trailing Bezzecchi by as much as 102 points as recently as the Italian Grand Prix back in May. Bezzecchi's run of poor luck at Misano, a crash after leading, following a season in which he had looked like the championship's most consistent points scorer, hands the title picture a different shape heading into the year's closing rounds.

WHAT'S NEXT

With Marquez and Martin now separated only by a tiebreaker and Bezzecchi facing a real points deficit to make up after a zero-score weekend, the remaining rounds of the season have the makings of a genuine title fight rather than a procession. For Marquez specifically, going from a practice crash on Friday to the championship lead by Sunday afternoon is the kind of turnaround that tends to define how a title race gets remembered, regardless of how the rest of the season plays out.
