Marquez and Martin Arrive Level on Points as MotoGP Heads to Austria

A CHAMPIONSHIP TIED ON POINTS

MotoGP arrives at the Red Bull Ring this weekend for round 15 with its title fight as close as it can get. Marc Marquez and Jorge Martin sit level on 274 points apiece, with Marquez holding the standings lead only on a tiebreaker thanks to his higher win total this season. The gap closed fast. Marquez has completed a 102-point comeback since falling behind at Mugello, taking three double victories, sweeping both the sprint and the Grand Prix, in his last four rounds. His most recent sweep came at San Marino, where he beat Martin outright and took over top spot in the championship for the first time all year.

BEZZECCHI STILL IN THE MIX, JUST

Marco Bezzecchi remains part of the conversation in third place, though he now sits 33 points off the lead. San Marino was a rough weekend for the Italian on home soil: he qualified on pole but crashed out on the opening lap of the Grand Prix in front of his own crowd. His shoulder and knee, both carrying injuries from earlier in the season, are continuing to heal, and Aprilia will be looking for him to bounce back at a track where the factory has never won at the premier-class level.

THE RED BULL RING'S OWN HISTORY

Ducati arrives as the dominant manufacturer at Spielberg, with 10 wins in 12 Grands Prix since the track returned to the calendar in 2016, a record built for a layout defined by long straights and heavy braking zones. Marquez's own history there is more complicated. Before his 2020 injury, the Red Bull Ring was the only circuit on the calendar where he had raced but never won, a spell he finally broke with a double victory in 2025. On the other side of the Ducati and Aprilia fight, Martin is chasing his second win at the venue, having taken his first premier-class victory there back in 2021.

A TIGHT MANUFACTURERS' FIGHT TOO

The constructors' championship is just as close as the riders' standings. Ducati leads Aprilia by only two points, 412 to 410, despite both manufacturers having won seven races apiece this season. Given Ducati's track record at Spielberg, the weekend carries real weight for both factories heading into the season's final rounds.

A CROWDED SUPPORTING CAST

The weekend is also KTM's home Grand Prix, and the last one with the current factory pairing of Pedro Acosta and Brad Binder before Fabio Di Giannantonio and Alex Marquez take over those seats for 2027. Binder's most recent MotoGP win came at this same track in 2021, but the pressure is on KTM to deliver at home after a string of engine reliability issues this season; team rider Acosta described the Austrian manufacturer's current pace as "still far" off the front in Thursday's press conference. Elsewhere on the grid, Ai Ogura returns for Trackhouse Racing after missing two rounds with a thumb injury, while Maverick Vinales remains sidelined and test rider Pol Espargaro fills in for a 300th career Grand Prix start. At Honda HRC, Takaaki Nakagami is standing in for the injured Joan Mir. In Moto3, KTM could wrap up the constructors' title on home soil if it leaves Spielberg with a lead of 175 points or more.

WHAT'S NEXT

With Marquez and Martin separated only by a tiebreaker and Bezzecchi still within reach in third, the Austrian Grand Prix is set up to swing the title picture again either way. Practice and qualifying run through the weekend at the Red Bull Ring, with the Grand Prix itself on Sunday, September 20.
