Mikey Musumeci Beats Bryce Mitchell by Decision in UFC BJJ 11 Crossover Headliner

A crossover main event

UFC BJJ 11 landed at the promotion's Apex facility in Las Vegas on Thursday night, streamed live on UFC Fight Pass. The card was built around a genuine crossover matchup: UFC featherweight Bryce Mitchell, who carries a 19-3 record inside the octagon, stepped onto the mat for a no-gi grappling match against Mikey Musumeci, the UFC's own BJJ bantamweight champion.

Musumeci arrived on a four-match submission streak in the promotion's grappling division, but he made the assignment harder on himself, fighting under self-imposed restrictions that ruled out guard-pulling, butt-scooting and his trademark leg-lock entries.

The result

Even with those handicaps, Musumeci got the nod, winning by unanimous decision over Mitchell in a contest that tested the featherweight's grappling credentials against a specialist on his own terms.

A split draw in the co-main

The co-feature produced a less clean-cut outcome. Mason Fowler, the UFC's BJJ light-heavyweight champion, met Nick "Nicky Rod" Rodriguez, the reigning CJI (Craig Jones Invitational) champion, in a match that judges scored a split draw.

The rest of the card

The broader eight-bout lineup featured Aurelie Le Verne against Rana Willink, Jay Rodriguez against Kevin Beuhring, Lucas Norat against Pedro Machado, Ryan Elgarico Jr. against Jordan Holy, Mason Stritzel against Sebastian Zazueta, and Kolby Gonzalez against Daniel Deeder.

UFC BJJ has increasingly become a proving ground for crossover matchups between the promotion's mixed martial artists and its dedicated grappling roster, and Thursday's headliner added another data point to that experiment, with the MMA fighter once again coming up short against a pure grappling specialist, even a handicapped one.
