MotoGP Title Fight Tightens to Three as Bezzecchi Climbs Into Contention

THE STANDINGS AFTER ARAGON
Jorge Martin still leads the 2026 MotoGP championship on 256 points after Aragon, but the gap behind him has shrunk on both sides. Marc Marquez took a maximum 37-point haul from the weekend and moved up to second on 237, now just 19 points back. Marco Bezzecchi sits third on 232, only 5 points behind Marquez and 24 behind Martin, after a weekend that several observers described as his best of the season relative to expectations.
With only 24 points separating all three riders, this has stopped being a two-rider fight between Martin and Marquez and turned into something closer to a genuine three-way title race.
WHY BEZZECCHI MATTERS NOW
Marquez's Aragon result grabbed the headlines, since it's his home circuit and the kind of dominant weekend that title defenses are built on. But Bezzecchi's steady points-scoring on the Aprilia, without a single standout headline result to point to, is exactly the sort of quiet consistency that decides championships over a full season. Closing to within single digits of second place while riding for a manufacturer that isn't Ducati adds a different complexion to the title fight than the Martin-versus-Marquez storyline suggests on its own.
HEADING TO MISANO
The series moved next to Misano for the San Marino Grand Prix, a track where Marquez has had strong results in the past but where Bezzecchi, riding in front of home fans, has also historically been fast.
THE SPRINT PROVED THE POINT
Saturday's sprint at Misano did exactly what a three-way title fight looks like in practice. Bezzecchi won it outright, while Marquez crashed out. The result pulls Bezzecchi even closer to the top of the standings and puts pressure squarely on Marquez heading into Sunday's Grand Prix, the clearest sign yet that this season's title fight is no longer a two-rider story.
