Nepal Beats UAE in ACC Premier Cup Final to Qualify for 2027 Asia Cup

THE FINAL

Nepal beat the United Arab Emirates by 44 runs at the Bayuemas Oval in Kuala Lumpur on September 12 to win the 2026 ACC Men's Premier Cup, the tournament that decided the final qualifying spot for the 2027 Asia Cup. Batting first after winning the toss, Nepal posted 313 for 9 in their 50 overs. The UAE fought hard in reply but were bowled out for 269 with three balls unused, unable to close the gap despite a fighting century from their own batter.

SHEIKH'S CENTURY SETS THE TONE

Wicketkeeper-batter Aasif Sheikh top-scored for Nepal with 102 off 106 balls, anchoring the innings after Arjun Kumal's 43 gave Nepal a solid platform at the top of the order. Rohit Paudel added 40 and Gulsan Jha struck a rapid 52 off just 38 balls down the order to push the total past 300. Sheikh's innings, built with eight fours and four sixes, earned him the player of the match award and gave Nepal's bowlers a total they could defend comfortably.

UAE's reply was built almost entirely around one innings. Rahul Chopra finished unbeaten on 100 off 105 balls, but he ran out of partners as wickets fell steadily at the other end. Sohaib Khan's 52 was the only other meaningful contribution, and once Chopra was left stranded with the tail, Nepal's bowling attack closed out the remaining wickets to seal the win.

LAMICHHANE'S TOURNAMENT

Legspinner Sandeep Lamichhane was named player of the series after finishing as the tournament's leading wicket-taker, a reward for a campaign in which his bowling repeatedly restricted stronger batting lineups through the group stage and knockouts. Karan KC took 3 for 49 in the final itself, while Lalit Rajbanshi and captain Dipendra Singh Airee each chipped in with a wicket apiece as Nepal's attack shared the work of defending the total.

WHAT THIS MEANS: THE ASIA CUP

The win carries weight well beyond the trophy. The 2026 ACC Men's Premier Cup served as the last qualifying event for the 2027 Asia Cup, with the champion earning the tournament's final spot. Nepal reached the final by topping Group A ahead of Hong Kong, then went through the knockout rounds unbeaten, a run that puts the national team into Asia's premier one-day tournament alongside the region's full-member nations for the first time. For a cricket board still building its international standing, qualification for the Asia Cup is a bigger long-term marker than the Premier Cup trophy itself.

WHAT'S NEXT

Many of the same names from this squad, including Airee, Lamichhane, Sheikh and Paudel, are already part of Nepal's squad for the Asian Games in Japan later this month, meaning the group barely has time to celebrate before turning to its next assignment. The Asia Cup itself is still more than a year away, but the win in Kuala Lumpur guarantees Nepal a place in it regardless of how the rest of 2026 and 2027 unfold.
