No, the Ocean Did Not Dry Up in Argentina

THE VIRAL CLAIM
A video circulating on TikTok, YouTube and Facebook claims the Atlantic Ocean in Argentina suddenly dried up or vanished overnight, with captions calling it a "global catastrophe" or sign of the apocalypse. The footage shown in many of these posts, including a widely shared clip, actually depicts a large cargo ship grounded on a muddy flat surrounded by dockyard cranes, consistent with a ship-breaking yard rather than any Argentine coastline. That specific video is not evidence of what happened in Argentina.
WHAT ACTUALLY HAPPENED
The real event took place along the coast of Mar del Plata, a seaside city in Argentina's Buenos Aires Province. Over several hours, the sea receded noticeably from the shore, exposing Restinga del Faro, a large rocky formation near the Punta Mogotes lighthouse that normally stays submerged. Because the formation is usually hidden underwater, its sudden appearance looked to onlookers like a new island had emerged. The water returned to its normal level within the same day.
WHY THE SEA RECEDED
Argentine outlets reported the retreat was caused by a combination of temporary natural forces: sustained offshore winds pushing surface water away from the coast, a shift in atmospheric pressure that temporarily lowered the regional sea level, and an unusually low tide that coincided with both. Scientists call this combination wind setdown, the opposite of a storm surge. It carried no tsunami risk, since tsunamis are triggered by underwater earthquakes or landslides and recede within minutes, not the several hours seen at Mar del Plata.
WHY IT WENT VIRAL
Footage of a suddenly exposed seabed looks similar to the early warning signs of a tsunami, which is precisely why so many viewers assumed the worst before local reporting caught up. Rare wind- and tide-driven sea recessions have gone viral with the same "ocean disappeared" framing in other coastal cities before, usually outrunning the more mundane meteorological explanation by hours or days on social media.
