Palestinian Flag Protests Halt Ireland's 2-2 Draw With Austria Twice

A match played through interruptions

The Republic of Ireland drew 2-2 with Austria in a UEFA Nations League Group B3 match in Dublin, a result that was twice overshadowed by protests tied to Ireland's upcoming fixture against Israel.

With Ireland leading 1-0 after 19 minutes, referee Allard Lindhout paused play after tennis balls bearing Palestinian flags and the words "Stop the Game" were thrown onto the pitch. A man also attempted to run onto the field carrying a Palestinian flag but was stopped by stewards before reaching the playing surface.

Parrott's night

On the field, Troy Parrott was the standout performer. He opened the scoring in the 12th minute with a solo effort, nutmegging one defender, eluding another, and finishing through the goalkeeper's legs. He later converted a penalty to put Ireland 2-0 up, before Austria fought back to level the match at 2-2.

The boycott debate

The protests are connected to growing pressure on the Football Association of Ireland to boycott its own "home" Nations League fixture against Israel, which has been relocated to a neutral, fan-free venue in Backa Topola, Serbia, this coming Sunday due to security concerns.

The issue has already split the Irish squad. Reserve goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu is boycotting both matches against Israel on principle, but the rest of the squad voted roughly 14-8 to play anyway. Ireland already played the first leg, beating Israel 3-0 in Debrecen, Hungary, with players wearing black armbands during that match.

What's next

With the draw against Austria in the books, Ireland's attention turns to Sunday's neutral-venue match against Israel, a fixture that looks set to remain a lightning rod for protest regardless of the result on the pitch.
