Shreyas Iyer's Maiden T20I Century Powers India Past West Indies in Series Opener

A century a long time coming
Shreyas Iyer finally has his first T20I hundred, and he picked a good night for it. India opened their five-match series against the West Indies at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow with an eight-wicket win, chasing down 172 in just 14.4 overs behind Iyer's unbeaten 102 off 43 balls.
The innings included ten fours and six sixes, a strike rate above 237, and came in an unbroken 137-run third-wicket stand with Ishan Kishan, who finished 37 not out. It was the kind of chase that turned what had looked like a competitive West Indies total into a formality by the back half of the innings.
West Indies gave India plenty to chase
The tourists had not made things easy. Captain Shai Hope top-scored with 52 off 37 balls, and Sherfane Rutherford added a quick 56 off 34, the pair combining to push West Indies to 171 after being put in. India's bowling attack had to work for the breakthroughs that kept the total in reach, with Naman Dhir the standout, taking 3 for 31 in his four overs, including the wickets of Hope, Romario Shepherd and Shamar Springer. Axar Patel chipped in with 2 for 26 and Kuldeep Yadav with 2 for 33.
What it means for the series
The win puts India 1-0 up with four matches remaining, with the series continuing at the JSCA International Stadium in Ranchi before moving to Indore, Hyderabad and finishing at Bengaluru's M. Chinnaswamy Stadium on October 17. For a West Indies side still rebuilding its white-ball depth, the Lucknow defeat is a reminder of how quickly a competitive total can evaporate against an India batting lineup capable of producing an innings like Iyer's on a given night. For Iyer himself, after years of being a fixture in India's ODI plans without a T20I century to his name, the long wait is now over.
