Solana's Nepal Flood Relief Auction Raises $166,946 in Final Tally

THE FINAL TALLY

Solana's live auction of nine "billboard" ad spots on its official X profile picture closed at $166,946.50, all of it going to Nepal's Prime Minister's Disaster Relief Fund. The auction had passed $150,000 with hours still on the clock, and the final push carried it past $166,900 before bidding closed.

HOW IT PLAYED OUT

Rollbit's $50,000 bid for the most prominent zone was the single largest contribution, with the remaining eight zones each selling for between roughly $12,800 and $16,300. Winners had their logos featured on Solana's profile picture and a pinned post for one week. Bids were denominated in US dollars rather than a token, so pledged amounts didn't shift in value between the bid and the payout.

A WRINKLE: NEPAL DOESN'T TAKE CRYPTO

The auction wasn't the only crypto-native contribution. Ripple separately pledged $300,000 to Nepal relief efforts. But Nepal's official Prime Minister's Disaster Relief Fund portal doesn't accept cryptocurrency directly, meaning donations raised this way have to be converted before they can reach the government's own channel, an awkward mismatch between how the money was raised and how it has to arrive.

THE BIGGER PICTURE

The auction was one of several fast-moving, internet-native fundraising efforts that sprang up alongside government and NGO relief campaigns after the August 26 floods, which have since killed more than 1,300 people and left nearly 5,000 missing.
