A lightning start

Spain beat England 3-2 at Wembley on Saturday in a UEFA Nations League Group A3 clash that swung several times, extending Spain's unbeaten run to 39 games.

The visitors could not have started faster. Lamine Yamal capitalized on a defensive error from Marc Guehi to open the scoring after just two minutes, the third-fastest goal England have conceded at Wembley in 70 years.

England hit back before the break

England responded with two goals in a four-minute spell before halftime. Anthony Gordon finished off a counter-attack combination with Jude Bellingham in the 36th minute, and Harry Kane headed in a cross from Nico O'Reilly four minutes later to put England 2-1 ahead at the interval.

A penalty, missed

Early in the second half, England won a penalty after a VAR review determined Rodri had fouled Bellingham. But Kane slipped during his run-up and struck the spot-kick against the crossbar in the 54th minute, a miss that would prove costly.

Spain made England pay. Substitute Alex Baena equalized in the 60th minute after another O'Reilly error, then Mikel Oyarzabal scored the winner in the 74th minute, converting a through ball from Baena.

Where it leaves both sides

The result puts Spain top of Group A3. England drop to third after Croatia beat the Czech Republic 2-1 in the group's other match.

England manager Thomas Tuchel did not hide his frustration afterward: "We had them, we had our chance to beat them. We made too many mistakes." Kane struck a more defiant tone, saying England "went toe-to-toe with Spain." Spain boss Luis de la Fuente was measured in victory: "The game was under control most of the time."

England will look to bounce back away to the Czech Republic on Tuesday, September 29, needing a response after letting a lead slip against the reigning world champions.
