World No. 1 Jannik Sinner Withdraws From Shanghai Masters as Knee Injury Lingers

Another tournament, another withdrawal

Jannik Sinner has pulled out of the Rolex Shanghai Masters, extending an absence from the tour that now stretches back to his Wimbledon final win over Alexander Zverev in July. The world number one had already missed the US Open and skipped the defense of his China Open title in Beijing because of the same right knee injury.

"My knee is not there where I would like to be and I am not ready to compete yet," Sinner said in explaining the latest withdrawal, a notably blunt assessment from a player who has generally tried to stay coy about return timelines through the layoff.

A tournament that goes on without him

Sinner's absence leaves the draw at Qizhong Forest Sports City Arena to a field still led by four-time former champion Novak Djokovic, alongside Zverev, Carlos Alcaraz, Daniil Medvedev, Ben Shelton, Felix Auger-Aliassime and defending champion Valentin Vacherot. The Shanghai Masters runs from October 7 to 18 and carries heavy ranking points and ATP Finals qualification implications for everyone left in the draw, implications that would normally have included Sinner front and center.

The bigger picture

For a player who has spent the back half of the season holding the number one ranking largely on the strength of results banked before the injury, each missed Masters event chips away at a buffer that rivals in Shanghai are actively trying to close. Sinner's camp has given no firm target for a return, framing the decision purely around not risking further damage to the knee rather than any specific event on the remaining calendar.

Until that changes, the sport's best player this season remains a spectator to a surface and a stretch of the calendar, hardcourts heading indoors, that has often suited him best.
