Zverev Survives Three-Set Battle With Bublik to Reach Shanghai Masters Quarterfinals

ZVEREV EDGES BUBLIK IN A THRILLER
Top seed Alexander Zverev survived a scare from Alexander Bublik in the round of 16 at the Rolex Shanghai Masters, winning 7-6(6), 4-6, 7-6(1) in a match that swung on tiebreaks at both ends. Bublik took the second set after dropping the opening breaker, but Zverev steadied himself to close it out in the decider and advance to the quarterfinals.
GEA KEEPS HIS RUN ALIVE
Arthur Gea, fresh off his upset of third seed Ben Shelton earlier in the tournament, beat 13th seed Jakub Mensik 7-6(4), 6-4 to reach the quarterfinals, extending one of the standout runs of the tournament for the Frenchman. Gea has yet to drop a set he couldn't recover from in Shanghai, and his win over Mensik continues a career-best stretch of results at Masters 1000 level.
Ninth seed Alex de Minaur had a more straightforward afternoon, beating 26th seed Karen Khachanov 6-3, 6-4 to reach his second consecutive quarterfinal in Shanghai. Elsewhere, 25th seed Alejandro Davidovich Fokina needed three sets to get past Hubert Hurkacz, winning 1-6, 6-3, 7-6(6) after dropping the opener.
A WIDE-OPEN QUARTERFINAL FIELD
With several seeded players already out of the draw, the Shanghai quarterfinals are shaping up as one of the more unpredictable in recent editions of the tournament. Zverev remains the highest-ranked player left in the draw, but Gea's continued run and de Minaur's consistency mean neither can be considered a lock heading into the next round.
