THE STAKES

MotoGP arrived at Misano for the San Marino Grand Prix, running September 11 through 13, with the title race tighter than it had been all season. Marc Marquez trailed championship leader Jorge Martin by just 19 points after sweeping both races at Aragon, with six rounds left on the calendar to close the gap completely.

THE SPRINT DIDN'T GO TO PLAN

Saturday's sprint at Misano did not go the way Marquez needed. Marco Bezzecchi won it for Aprilia, while Marquez crashed out, a result that hands Bezzecchi valuable points in the three-way fight at the top of the standings and leaves Marquez needing a big result in Sunday's Grand Prix just to keep pace in the title race.

WHAT MISANO MEANS

The Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli typically draws crowds of up to 60,000, and its tight, technical layout usually rewards riders who carry corner speed well, a category where Marquez has historically excelled. That history is exactly why Saturday's crash stings more than a bad result at a track that suited him less would have.

WHAT'S NEXT

Sunday's Grand Prix is still to come, and it now carries even more weight than it did before the sprint. A strong result for Martin would go a long way toward settling the title race before its final stretch; a big comeback from Marquez would keep his charge alive after a costly Saturday.
